Wheat seeds
The main goal of establishing the National Seed Production and Agricultural Services Company in 1987 was to produce wheat and barley seeds locally and provide them to farmers instead of importing them from abroad. Indeed, since that year, the company began producing large quantities of certified wheat and barley seeds (first generation certified seeds) of high quality and conforming to international specifications. The company’s annual productivity during the period from 1987 to 2000 exceeded 40,000 tons of seeds annually.
However, the company’s seed production has declined over the past two decades to its minimum due to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture’s intention to reduce the areas cultivated with wheat and barley in the Kingdom to its minimum level in order to reduce the depletion of groundwater. Therefore, during the last two decades, the production of wheat and barley seeds has no longer been the company’s main activity. Rather, the focus has shifted to producing vegetable seedlings and tree seedlings of various types. The focus in the company’s project in Al-Jouf has also shifted to the production of olive oil.
